The fourth-ranked North Carolina field hockey team kicks off the home portion of its schedule Friday, hosting a familiar foe, No. 2 Wake Forest, for a 6 p.m. game at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Both teams head into the contest with 2-0 records.
There is no charge for admission to the game.
After scrimmaging twice during the preseason, both teams opened the 2009 season last weekend at the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at Iowa, picking up wins against Michigan and the host Hawkeyes as the ACC teams swept the event.
"We're excited to play Wake Forest," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We have a very good relationship with them and their program, hence we scrimmaged each other twice in the preseason. We make each other better. It's always a very competitive game."
Although both are Atlantic Coast Conference members, Friday's game will not count toward the ACC standings. The Oct. 3 game in Winston-Salem is this year's designated conference game between the two.
UNC leads the overall series 31-19-4. The teams split last year, with WFU winning in penalty strokes in Winston-Salem on Sept. 5 and Carolina topping the Deacons 4-3 in Chapel Hill on Oct. 4.
