Tar Heels Dispatch Grambling State 3-0

WICHITA, KAN. - North Carolina registered its second victory of the day Saturday defeating Grambling State 25-21, 25-13 and 25-18. The Tar Heels were lead by senior captain Megan Owens eight kills and Erica Behm's 21 assists. Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland added six kills and Cora Harms 12 assists as the Tar Heels' cruised to their third win of the season. The Heels came from behind earlier in the day to defeat Oklahoma 3-2 after dropping the first two sets.
The Tar Heels got off to yet another slow start Saturday as Grambling State scored the first five points of the set. A blocking error and a Heather Brooks tip finally got the Heels on the board. An Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland and Megan Owens kill later put the Tar Heels in front 8-7 prompting a Grambling State timeout. The Tigers continued to stay close the entire set behind Kendra Johnson's four kills. Carolina was able to take the set 25-21. The Tar Heels hit at a .355 clip due to four tip kills.
In the second set the Tar Heels got off to a solid start jumping out to a quick 14-7 lead. Shelbey Bleke and Heather Henry added a couple kills to lead the Heels' attack early in the second frame. Freshman Meg Yanda got into the act registering a pair of kills courtesy of an Erica Behm assist. Carolina claimed the second set 25-13 to lead the match 2-0. The Tar Heels posted a .300 hitting percentage with 13 kills while holding the Tigers to a .000 clip.
Carolina entered a pair of subs in the third frame to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead forcing a Tiger timeout. Branagan Fuller added a kill and block assist while Hanson-Tuntland notched two quick kills to push the lead to 8-2. Grambling State battled back to cut the Carolina lead to five at 16-11. Carolina was lead by Fuller's and Owens' six kills in the third set. The Tar Heels hit a game-high .348 in the final frame to win the set 25-18 and match 3-0.

Tonight was the first ever meeting between the Tar Heels and the Tigers. Carolina improves to 3-3 while Grambling State falls to 1-6. North Carolina will be back in action next weekend for the Carolina Classic with participating teams Tennessee, Marshall and Colorado State.
