Tar Heels & Bulldogs Split Dual Meets

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams split with the University of Georgia in dual meet action Friday afternoon at Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heel men prevailed 183-117 over the Bulldogs while the Georgia women defeated Carolina 168-132.
Carolina had several performers turn in some impressive swims for the Tar Heels that moved them into the ranks of the Top 10 all-time at UNC. Senior Tyler Harris took second place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:08.02, which moves into third place all-time in UNC history, trailing only first-team All-Americas Chip Peterson and Joe Kinderwater in the event. On the women's side, Stephanie Peacock swam a 1:47.80 in the 200 free to place second in the event. That moved her into eighth place all-time in in Tar Heel history, bumping All-America Whitney Sprague from the Top 10. Peacock won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:43.70, making her third all-time in that event at Carolina behind only first-team All-Americas Sprague and Katura Harvey, a senior on the current squad.
The Tar Heel men won both relays en route to beating the Bulldogs in dual meet action for the second straight year. The Tar Heels also won eight of the 14 individual events with seniors Joe Kinderwater and Tommy Wyher and redshirt junior David MacDonald each winning two events. Kinderwater swept the distance free events, going a blazing 9:05.20 in the 1000 and winning the 500 in 4:28.20. Wyher pulled off his usual double by winning the 100 back in 48.30 and the 100 fly in 48.16. MacDonald swept both boards for UNC, taking the one-meter with 339.67 points and the three-meter with 354.75 points. Other individual winners for Carolina were senior Vinny Pryor in the 100 breast and junior Steve Cebertowicz in the 100 free. Cebertowicz and Wyher were on both winning relays for Carolina.
On the women's side, senior Rebecca Kane and sophomore Carly Smith both swam on the victorious 200-yard medley relay team while also snaring two individual event wins each. Smith won the 100 back in 54.36 and the 200 back in 1:57,73. Kane took first place in the 50 free at 23.05 and the 100 free at 50.49. Other winners for Carolina were Peacock in the 500 free, sophomore Katie Nolan in the 100 fly, junior Laura Moriarty in the 200 breast, junior Jenna Moore in three-meter diving and the 200 medley relay team.
The Tar Heel men improved to 2-0 on the season while the UNC women are now 1-1. Both teams will be in action again next Friday with a dual meet at Maryland.
