COLLEGE PARK, MD. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams won their Atlantic Coast Conference openers on Friday afternoon, defeating the Maryland Terrapins at the Eppley Recreation Center. The UNC women won 165-127 over Maryland while the Tar Heel men prevailed 165-121.
Carolina's women won 13 of the 16 events in the women's meet with freshman Stephanie Peacock, senior Rebecca Kane, junior Jenna Moore and senior Katura Harvey each winning two individual events for Coach Rich DeSelm's team.
Harvey had a team season best time of 9:56.72 in capturing the 1000-yard freestyle and she took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:56.12. Harvey's time in the 1000 is the seventh fastest in the country this year. Peacock took a pair of first places, winning the 200 in 1:48.56 and the 400 IM in 4:17.59. Peacock's clocking in the IM is the third fastest time in the collegiate ranks so far in the 2010-11 season. It also makes her the 10th fastest 400 IM performer in UNC history in the event.
Junior Jenna Moore won both diving events as she scored 271.05 points on the one-meter board and 273.67 in the three-meter event. UNC senior Kane equaled the second best time in the country to date in the 50 free with a 22.72 clocking and her 49.69 in the 100 free ranks her fourth nationally.
"We had great senior leadership on the women's side with both Katura Harvey and Rebecca Kane both winning two events. Rebecca Kane was outstanding as she posted some of the best dual meet times of her career," said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm.
Carolina swept all 16 events on the men's side with junior Steve Cebertowicz (200 free, 100 free), junior Colin Bridier (100 breast, 200 breast) and junior Brad Hamilton (50 free, 100 fly) each winning two events. Bridier, an exchange student from France with junior eligibility, won the 100 in 56.09, the 11th fastest time in the nation, and the 200 in 2:02.11, sixth best time nationally to date in the event.
Senior Tommy Wyher won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:48.62, matching the 11th best time so far nationally in 2010-11. Brad Hamilton's time of 49.94 matches the 11th best time nationally as well.
Senior Tyler Harris excelled in his top event, the 400-yard individual medley, as he went a 3:53.70. That makes him the second best performer so far in the nation, behind only Adam Meyer of Navy at 3:52.39.
"On the men's side, Tommy Wyher began his assault on the ACC by branching into the 200 back, going a strong time of 1:48.62," said DeSelm. "Brad Hamilton is having an extremely good fall. That was a breakthrough fly for him and he had an extremely strong 50 and some excellent relay splits. "Colin Bridier, in his first meet with the Tar Heels, won the two breaststroke events and posted some of our top times this season in those events. Steve Cebertowicz also turned in a pair of wins and continues his excellent relay swimming."
"In general we had a great week of training, traveled up last night after practice and practiced again this morning," said DeSelm. "We mixed our lineup to allow for some people to swim some events they had yet been able to swim this year but still were aggressive with our approach to the meet and tried to set ourselves up for the next meet at Minnesota."
Carolina improves to 3-0 on the men's side and 1-0 in the ACC while Maryland falls to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the ACC. The UNC women improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the league while Maryland is now 2-1 overall and 2-1 in ACC action.
Carolina will travel to Minnesota next Saturday to meet the Golden Gophers in a noon meet.
