CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina field hockey coach Karen Shelton has been named the 2010 Dita/NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year, as announced on Wednesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. One of five regional honorees, Shelton is now a candidate for National Coach of the Year honors, which will be announced on Jan. 7.
Other honorees are Maryland's Missy Meharg (MidAtlantic Region), Penn State's Char Morett (Mideast Region), UMass' Justine Sowry (Northeast Region) and Ohio State's Anne Wilkinson (West Region). Meharg led the Terrapins to the NCAA title, beating Carolina 3-2 in double overtime in College Park, Md., on Nov. 21.
The 2010 season was Shelton's 30th at UNC, and she led the Tar Heels to a 22-3 record and a third championship game appearance in the past four years. Carolina finished as the NCAA runner-up in 2010 after winning titles in 2007 and 2009. UNC also was the Atlantic Coast Conference runner-up in 2010, falling to Maryland in the title game. Shelton has been named National Coach of the Year five times, most recently in 2009. She has a career record of 504-136-9, all at UNC.
