With a 3-1 win over Canada on Thursday, the U.S. advanced to face Korea in the final game of the 2010 AtaHolding World Cup Qualifier. The winner of Saturday's game earns a berth in the World Cup, to be played in Argentina this September.
The game was significant for several of the six Tar Heels on the team. UNC alum Rachel Dawson made her 100th international appearance and received flowers before the match to celebrate her historic cap. She went on to score twice on penalty corners. Jesse Gey, Dawson's teammate on Carolina's 2007 NCAA title team, provided the third goal.
Jackie Kintzer, a rising senior at UNC, made her first start for the U.S. team, replacing Tar Heel alum Amy Tran in goal.
Joining Dawson, Gey, Kintzer and Tran on the squad are rising senior Katelyn Falgowski and UNC alum Carrie Lingo, who serves as the team captain.
The Qualifier championship is scheduled for 2:30 PDT/5:30 EDT on Saturday. Live video will be available through the U.S. Field Hockey website. For more information, click here.
