For some, a visit to the White House - and a chance to meet the President - is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The UNC field hockey team did just that on Monday, for the second time in the last three years.
The 2009 Carolina field hockey squad joined other 2009-10 NCAA champions on the afternoon of Sept. 13 to be honored at the White House. Congratulatory words from President Barack Obama highlighted the reception on the South Lawn, and many team members were able to shake his hand afterward. The Tar Heels also enjoyed the chance to mingle with other championship teams and take plenty of photos.
The UNC field hockey program also traveled to the White House to celebrate its 2007 title.
"A lot of the girls had the opportunity to go after the 2007 championship, and this was just as much of a thrill," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It was different, but with the new administration it was very exciting for our student-athletes. We didn't expect to be as close as we were, and the President shook just about everybody's hand. It was a great honor to be there.
"It was a great day for our program and recognition of the 2009 national championship."
As a senior, goalkeeper Jackie Kintzer was among those visiting for the second time.
"If we hadn't worked so hard and earned this trip, I never would have gotten to meet either of the presidents that we have," she said. "It makes you so thankful to be a part of a program like this. Everyone that was there with us competes at such a high level in their sport and it was cool to meet other people who excel at what they do. Without being a part of UNC field hockey I wouldn't have had that opportunity."
