CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Five different players scored as the top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team beat visiting William & Mary 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels improved to 7-0 with their fourth shutout of the year, while the Tribe fell to 2-6.
"It's nice to get a shutout, which we haven't had for the last three games," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "The fact that we limited them to one shot was a real positive today. I think we had a quick start and we had the chance to play a lot of people. I'm delighted with the win."
Sophomore Kelsey Kolojejchick opened the scoring in the seventh minute with her team-high seventh goal of the year, deflecting in a ball from freshman Marta Malmberg on a UNC penalty corner. Malmberg's assist was her sixth, which leads the team.
Kolojejchick assisted on the next goal, sending a hard shot toward the cage, where it was deflected in by freshman Katie Shanahan to put the Tar Heels up 2-0 in the 19th minute of play. In the 22nd minute, UNC scored on another penalty corner, with junior Meghan Dawson on the shot, assisted by sophomore Katie Ardrey on the push-out and junior Teryn Brill on the stick stop.
After leading 3-0 at halftime, the Tar Heels added two more goals in the second period. Just 1:45 into the half, UNC scored on a corner, when sophomore Caitlin Van Sickle got her stick on a loose ball following a William & Mary save and sent it in for her fifth goal of the year. The final tally came with three minutes to play, when junior Elizabeth Stephens sent a hard shot toward the cage from right side, where hit a defender and got past substitute keeper Elizabeth Frey, who played the final 21:25 in goal for the Tribe.
UNC finished with a season-high 31 shots and 13 corners, while William & Mary got off one second-half shot but did not draw a corner on the day. The game marked the second time this season that Carolina has held an opponent without a corner, with the other the win over Iowa.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Duke on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m. Carolina's next home game is Sunday, Sept. 26, when the Stanford Cardinal visits Henry Stadium for a 1 p.m. game.
