CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team, 2-0 on the season, will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. on Friday for a battle with No. 6 Wake Forest (2-0). Game time at Kentner Stadium is 3 p.m.
Although the two are Atlantic Coast Conference rivals, the game will not count toward the conference standings. ACC teams meet each other once per year in conference play, but UNC and Wake choose to schedule home-and-home games each year. Thus, one game is an ACC contest while the other is non-conference. This year's designated conference game is the one in Chapel Hill, which is scheduled for Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
The last time the Tar Heels played at Kentner Stadium, they left with an NCAA Championship trophy. In 2009, Carolina played all four NCAA tournament games in Winston-Salem, which hosted first and second round games, as well as the field hockey final four.
UNC and Wake Forest have yet to face off this season, but the teams have seen plenty of each other. Both competed in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Chapel Hill last weekend, and both emerged with a pair of wins. Wake Forest beat Iowa 3-1 and Michigan 5-1. UNC beat Iowa 3-0 and Michigan 3-0.
