DURHAM, N.C. - A penalty corner goal in the 61st minute of play gave top-ranked North Carolina a 1-0 field hockey win over No. 13 Duke Saturday afternoon in the Tar Heels' Atlantic Coast Conference opener. UNC improved to 8-0 overall with the win, while the Blue Devils fell to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The win gave UNC one point in the battle for the Carlyle Cup, the annual all-sports competition between Carolina and Duke.
In a defensive battle at Williams Field, neither team could muster much offense, with a total of just seven shots (four by UNC, three by Duke) in the first half. Each team had only two shots after halftime, but the Tar Heels were able to make one of theirs count. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Carolina junior Elizabeth Stephens dribbled into the circle and drew a corner, UNC's fourth of the game and only one in the second half. Sophomore Katie Ardrey sent the push-out straight to sophomore Caitlin Van Sickle, who delivered a hard shot to the right side of the cage. Duke goalkeeper Samantha Nelson was able to get a touch on the ball but couldn't keep it from rolling in for the Tar Heel goal. The score was the sixth of the season for Van Sickle.
"It was a really hard fought battle and I'm proud of our kids for not only winning the game but getting the shutout," said UNC coach Karen Shelton, whose team earned its fifth shutout of the season. "I thought the key to the game was our defensive poise. We made a lot of very clean tackles in our defending circle. We don't make those tackles and were giving up penalty corners and will eventually concede goals. I was proud of our defense for playing so well."
The Tar Heels return to action on Sunday, hosting No. 18 Stanford at Henry Stadium for a 1 p.m. game.
