Carolina Falls To Missouri State 3-1

SPRINGFIELD, MO. -- Missouri State used a powerful attack to down North Carolina 3-1(20-25, 19-25, 25-20, 19-25) in Carolina's fourth match of the JQH Invitational Saturday night at the Hammons Student Center. Erica Behm led the Tar Heels, who fall to 4-3 in 2010, with a season-high 38 assists.
Christine Vaughen registered 12 kills to just one error and Suzanne Haydel added 10 kills to round out the UNC offense. Kaylie Gibson posted 20 digs to anchor the Carolina defense. Missouri State notched a .286 hitting percentage with four players with at least 10 or more kills.
Missouri State limited Carolina to just a .059 hitting percentage to claim set one 25-20. The Bears notched three team blocks and earned a .237 hitting percentage. Libero Gibson kept the Tar Heels within striking distance with eight digs, but the Bears used a 5-0 run to end the first frame.
The Bears controlled the second set with a .297 hitting percentage to push in front 2-0 with a 25-19 set win. The Tar Heels struggled to get ahead, plagued by a pair of block errors. Vaughen led Carolina with four kills, but Missouri State notched another three blocks to vault into a 2-0 lead.
Carolina jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the third frame behind a balanced attack. The lead was short-lived as the Bears rumbled back to knot the score at 15. UNC hung tough using a 6-0 run to jump ahead 21-15 lead with a big boost off the bench from freshman Kayla Berringer. The Tar Heels withstood another Missouri State run to win set three 25-20. Carolina mashed a match-best .381 hitting percentage and registered three blocks.
UNC carried their momentum into the fourth frame darting out to an 8-4 lead. Both teams traded points and Missouri State took the slight lead at 20-18. The Bears proved too much finishing off the Tar Heels with a 25-20 set win and 3-1 match victory.
Carolina will be back in action next weekend from Sept. 10-11 at the LSU Tiger Classic. UNC will challenge host LSU, Rice and New Mexico State.
