The U.S. Field Hockey National Team, with a roster that includes four Tar Heels, beat Argentina 4-2 Friday to claim the Pan American Games gold medal and earn a berth in the 2012 Olympics in London.
This year marked the U.S. team's fifth consecutive appearance in the Pan Am finals, and each of the previous four times Argentina, currently ranked No. 1 in the world, had taken the gold.
Tar Heels representing the U.S. in Guadalajara, Mexico, are Rachel Dawson, Katelyn Falgowski, Jesse Gey and Jackie Kintzer. Both Gey and Kintzer originally were alternates but were added to the team after injuries. Kintzer, the team's goalkeeper, replaced another Tar Heel, Amy Tran Swensen.
Falgowski, the one player on the U.S. squad who also is playing for her college team this fall, will rejoin her Carolina teammates in Norfolk, Va., for Sunday's matchup with Old Dominion. UNC is No. 2 heading into the final game of the regular season, while the host Lady Monarchs are No 1. ODU beat UNC 3-1 earlier this season in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heel captain, Falgowski left the UNC team following the Sept. 30 game at Wake Forest and has missed the past seven games. Carolina has been undefeated in her absence and is 17-1 heading into Sunday's showdown.
