LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The UNC field hockey team left Chapel Hill on Wednesday for Louisville, where the Tar Heels will play on Sunday for the program's seventh NCAA Championship. However, the players didn't leave their academic responsibilities back on campus. Study time was built into each day's schedule, and several players took exams while on the road. Tony Yount, the team's academic counselor, traveled to Louisville with the team and administered exams and quizzes on Friday morning so that the field hockey players would be taking the tests at the same time as their classmates back in Chapel Hill.

Sophomore Marta Malmberg is a perfect example of the student-athlete ideal of excelling on and off the field. A starter in every game of her career and a member of the U.S. Field Hockey National Development Team, she was honored at the final four banquet on Thursday night as the recipient of the Elite 89 Award for being the player competing in Louisville who has the highest GPA. Malmberg, a defender from Marathon, N.Y, carries at 3.933 GPA in psychology.
"It takes hard work to be a good player and it takes hard work to be a good student," Shelton said. "We want to make sure that our Tar Heels are taking the time and putting in the effort necessary to be both. Marta sets a high standard for that, and we expect the rest of the team to do that as well. It's important that they have the complete student-athlete experience - that's what representing Carolina is all about."
