The University of North Carolina field hockey team has been named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for October 31-November 6, 2011. The top-ranked Tar Heels beat No. 8 Duke 2-1 on Sunday to claim the program's first ACC Championship since 2007 and the 17th overall. Playing at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex, UNC scored twice in the second half on penalty corners, the first by junior Katie Ardrey and the second by senior Elizabeth Stephens. The Tar Heels are 20-1 overall heading into NCAA Tournament play.
Other nominees for this week's award included:
MATT HEDGES
Men's Soccer
Defender, Senior
Carmel, Ind.
Matt Hedges helped lead the Tar Heels to a 2-0 win at No. 10 Boston College to wrap up Carolina's third-straight ACC regular season title. The senior defender tallied the game-winning goal early in the second half and helped lead the Tar Heel defense to its seventh shutout of the season and its fourth in ACC play. Hedges has been a key contributor to a Tar Heel defense that leads the ACC in fewest goals allowed with only 13 finding the back of the net in the regular season. The goal was Hedges' fourth of the year, with two coming in the final two games of the season.
EVAN HENDERSON
Wrestling
Freshman
New Florence, Pa.
Freshman Evan Henderson opened his career in impressive fashion Sunday afternoon in Salem, Va. As he claimed the top spot at 141 pounds at the Hokie Open. Henderson rolled his way to the semifinals with a pair of pins and a major decision before knocking off No. 15 Darrius Little of rival NC State. Henderson capped off a dominant opening weekend with a 7-4 decision over The Citadel's Khishignyam Undrakhbayer for the tournament title.
DOMINICK GLAVICH
Men's Swimming
Freshman
Cary, N.C.
Freshman Dominick Glavich won both butterfly events and swam the breaststroke leg on UNC's victorious 200 medley relay as the Tar Heels routed Maryland 180-119 in dual meet action. Glavich helped the Tar Heels get off an outstanding start as he swam the breaststroke leg on the 200 medley relay, splitting 25.90 as Carolina in 1:31.89. Glavich then swept the two butterfly events. He went 1:47.63, an NCAA "B" standard, to win the 200 butterfly, just off his career best of 1:47.13 in the event. Glavich has the top time in the ACC in the event and he beat 2011 first-team All-America and UNC teammate Tom Luchsinger by 2.7 seconds in the event Saturday. Later in the meet, he won the 100 butterfly in 49.91 seconds, his season best time, and just a second off his career best time of 48.82.
LAURA MORIARTY
Women's Swimming
Senior
Methuen, Mass.
Senior co-captain Laura Moriarty had the top performance in three individual events and also swam the breaststroke leg on the winning 200 medley relay as North Carolina's women defeated previously undefeated Maryland 178-121 in dual meet action. In each of her three individual event wins Moriarty was less than a second off the NCAA B qualifying standard in the event, winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.22, the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.71 and the 400 individual medley in 4:19.96. Moriarty also had the fastest breaststroke split of any swimmer as Carolina won the 200 medley relay to get the Tar Heels off to a quick lead. Carolina won the first five events of the meet to put early separation between the Tar Heels and the Terrapins and Moriarty had a hand in two of the five early wins. After Maryland won three of the next five events, Moriarty shut the door on the Terps' comeback effort by winning the 200 breaststroke by a margin of over 2 seconds. She also had the top performance in the 400 IM by a margin of nearly 3 seconds over her closest competitor.
