CHAPEL HILL --- Chay Shegog finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 20 North Carolina past Carson-Newman, 91-43, Wednesday night in an exhibition contest at Carmichael Arena. Carolina held the Division II Eagles to just 2-of-29 shooting after halftime to turn a close game into a rout.
The Tar Heels struggled from the field in the opening 20 minutes and led by just four points at the break after shooting less than 30 percent from the field.
But a 13-0 run to open the second half pushed the Carolina lead to 45-28 and the Eagles would get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Shannon Smith scored 13 points off the bench, while Latifah Coleman finished with 12 and Danielle Butts added 11.
Shannon Depew led Carson-Newman with 13 points but fouled out with 15:19 remaining in the game, and the Eagles had few answers after that.
Carolina upped the intensity on both ends after the break, forcing a total of 36 turnovers for the game and converting those takeaways into 28 points. After a Whitney Moody three-pointer with 16:19 left in the game, the Tar Heels did not allow another field goal for over 15 minutes.
All 10 healthy players scored for the Tar Heels, who open the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m. against defending Big South champion Gardner-Webb.
