North Carolina's Katelyn Falgowski has been named a 2011 World All-Star, as announced Thursday by the FIH, the international governing body for field hockey. Falgowski, a senior on the 2011 Tar Heel field hockey team who graduated from UNC this month, was the only U.S. player named to the 18-member women's squad.
The team was determined by voting on the FIH website earlier this month. It is intended to recognize the top players in the world based on their play in the past calendar year.
Falgowski, who was honored as a defender, is a longtime member of the U.S. National Team. In October, she helped the squad to its first-ever gold medal at the Pan American Games, earning a berth in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. In her final season at UNC, Falgowski was recognized as the Division I National Player of the Year and she finished her Tar Heel career as the program's all-time leader in assists. She was named Player of the Tournament at the USA Field Hockey National Championships in 2010 and 2011.
Falgowski, who is from Landenberg, Pa., also is one of five nominees for the FIH Young Player of the Year Award, the winner of which will be announced next month.
