Two former North Carolina players are among four U.S. players named to the 2011 Pan American Elite Team for women, announced Monday. Rachel Dawson and Jackie Kintzer were among 16 players named to the women's team, which is selected every two years and recognizes the top players in the Pan American region.
Also representing the U.S. on the team are captain Lauren Crandall and Katie O'Donnell. Crandall is a Wake Forest alum and O'Donnell played at Maryland, giving Atlantic Coast Conference schools all four American spots on team. Other countries represented were Argentina and Chile (three each), Canada (two), and Barbados, Cuba, Mexico and Uruguay (one each).
The U.S. won the Pam Am Games gold in 2011 for the first time ever, earning a berth in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. Argentina finished with the silver and Chile the bronze.
Field hockey experts present at the 2011 Pan American Games and 2011 Pan American Challenge selected the teams. For a complete listing of the men's and women's teams, as well as photos of all of the honorees, go to click panamhockey.org.
