Sun Safety Project

June 14, 2011
The 'Sun Safety Campaign' provides an opportunity to expand a simple project created in the summer of 2010. Last year, by creating a partnership between the UNC Field Hockey team and the IFC Homeless Shelter, we were able to create an awareness project for both players at the UNC Field Hockey camps and the shelter to remember the importance of sunscreen. By donating sun screen to those less fortunate, we are not only addressing an important community need but giving ourselves a constant reminder of the importance of sun safety.

Sun Safety Tips
- Generously apply a broad-spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or more to all exposed skin. Broad Spectrum provides protection both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays.
- Reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours, even on cloudy days and after swimming or sweating.
- Wear protective clothing, where possible.
- Seek shade when appropriate. The sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If your shadow appears to be shorter than you are, seek shade.
- Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand because they reflect and intensify the damaging rays of the sun.
- Avoid tanning beds.
