The U.S. Field Hockey National Team finished second at the Champions Challenge in Dublin, Ireland, after falling 3-2 to Japan in the title match on Sunday. Four Tar Heels were part of the 18-player U.S. team roster for the event.
The U.S. led 2-0 after goals by former Wake Forest player Michelle Kasold, who is from Chapel Hill, and former Maryland player Katie O'Donnell. But Japan scored on a corner a minute before the break to pull within one, then tied the game on a penalty stroke in the 41st minute. In the final minute of play with the score tied 2-2, Japan drew a corner and was able to capitalize, pulling ahead with seconds remaining on the clock to claim the championship.
Representing UNC were Katelyn Falgowski, who is a rising senior on the Tar Heel squad, and former Carolina players Rachel Dawson, Jackie Kintzer and Amy (Tran) Swensen.
