ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The North Carolina field hockey team earned its second shutout of the weekend on Sunday, beating Iowa 2-0 to come away from the ACC-Big Ten Challenge undefeated for the third year in a row. As in Saturday's 5-0 win over Michigan, UNC got the gamewinner less than five minutes into the action against the Hawkeyes, with junior Kelsey Kolojejchick's goal off of a rebound 4:34 into the game. The second goal in as many days for the All-America midfielder put UNC ahead for good.
With three minutes remaining in the game, junior Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany scored her first goal of the fall, also came off a rebound, to make it 2-0.
"I was very pleased to come away with two shutouts in such a prestigious event," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Our goalkeepers played well and our defense was solid. Our team showed some growth, and I'm just delighted with the way the weekend went. "Iowa is a tough team. We had a lot of shots today and created a lot of chances, but the Iowa goalkeeper was stellar."
The Tar Heels, ranked No. 2 in the preseason national poll, are 2-0 on the season heading into Friday's home opener against No. 5 Syracuse.
Sophomore Caitlin Powers and freshman Sassi Ammer again shared the shutout, with Powers starting and Ammer playing the second half, when she saved Iowa's only shot on goal. Carolina took 23 shots to three by Iowa, which finished the weekend 1-1 after beating Wake Forest 3-2 on Saturday. UNC had nine penalty corners, five of them in the second half, while Iowa drew four.
Senior Katelyn Falgowski was honored as UNC's Player of the Game. "Her poise in the middle produced possessions and scoring opportunities for us time and time again," Shelton said. "Katelyn played with such maturity and calm - she was a standout on the field."
