GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina forward Elizabeth Stephens has been named ACC Field Hockey Co-Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the league. Stephens, a senior from St. Louis, scored the gamewinning goal in double overtime as UNC beat Duke 1-0 last Saturday.
In the ACC opener for Carolina, played at Francis E. Henry Stadium, the teams battled through a scoreless 85 minutes before Stephens' goal, which came 27 seconds into the second overtime period. Tar Heel junior Kelsey Kolojejchick sent a ball into the circle from the baseline and senior Katelyn Falgowski dove to tip it to Stephens, who scored on her second effort to give UNC the victory.
On Sunday against Davidson, Stephens added another goal and assisted on the gamewinner by Kolojejchick in a 5-0 victory that improved the Tar Heels to 9-1 overall. Stephens, the team's vice-captain, has five goals this season, fourth on the team. With her three assists, she totals 13 points, which is third on the team.
The player of the week honor is the first of her career.
Stephens shares the honor with Boston College's Courtney Tavener, who had a hat trick, including the gamewinner, in the Eagles' double OT win at Virginia last weekend.
North Carolina returns to action Friday when it travels to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest in an ACC matchup. Carolina hosts Radford on Sunday at Henry Stadium.
