DADE CITY, FLA. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team is in fourth place after the first round of the USF Invitational. The Tar Heels fired a 4-over-par 292 on Sunday and were led by two juniors, Michael McGowan and Clark Palmer.
McGowan, from Southern Pines, N.C., and Palmer, from Augusta, Ga., both carded four birdies and three bogies in the first round and stand tied for seventh place at 1-under 71. Patrick Barrett, a redshirt junior from Pinehurst, N.C., fired a 2-over 74 and is tied for 23rd place. Freshman Brandon Dalinka, from Newtown, Pa., carded a 4-over 76 on Sunday and is tied for 43rd while freshman Bailey Patrick, from Charlotte, N.C., shot a 78 and is tied for 56th. Matt Raudenbush, a senior from Pine Valley, N.J., carded a 1-over 73 while playing as an individual and is tied for 15th.
UCF leads the field of 17 teams after firing a 4-under-par 284 in the first round and holds a five-stroke lead over Middle Tennessee State which carded a 1-over 289. Georgia is in third place with a 291 total, one stroke ahead of Carolina's 292 which puts them in fourth place. Kentucky and South Florida are tied for fifth place with 295 totals.
Jose Joia of UCF grabbed the individual lead after firing a 7-under-par 65 in the first round while teammate Brad Schneider is two strokes back in second place at 5-under 67. Rick Kittelstad of South Florida and Brad Simons of Middle Tennessee State both shot a 3-under 69 and are tied for third place while three players are tied for fifth at 2-under 70 - Louisville's Justin Dorward, Georgia's TJ Mitchell and Florida State's Wesley Graham, who is competing as an individual.
The 54-hole event continues through Tuesday at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club which features a par 72, 7,060-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
