CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Five North Carolina field hockey players have been named to the Division I National Academic Squad, as announced Monday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Tollie Bell, Meghan Drake, Meghan Lyons, Marta Malmberg and Loren Shealy all earned the honor, which requires a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better through the fall 2011 semester.
Bell, who is from Norfolk, Va., did not see action during the 2011 season will count it as a redshirt year. She will be a redshirt freshman on the 2012 roster.
Drake, a biology major from Fort Worth, Texas, is a rising junior on the 2012 roster. She played in nine games last season for the Tar Heels.
Lyons, a business journalism major from Wilmington, Del., also will be a junior on the 2012 roster. She played in 10 games last season for the Tar Heels and was named to the squad for the third year in a row.
Malmberg, a business major from Marathon, N.Y., started all 25 games last season as a sophomore. In November, she was honored with the NCAA's Elite 89 Award as the player with the highest GPA at the final four. This year marks the second time she has been named to the National Academic Squad.
Shealy, a business major from Charlotte, N.C., played in all 25 games last season as a true freshman, starting six.
