CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Katelyn Falgowski, the 2011 National Field Hockey Player of the Year and a December 2011 UNC graduate, was inducted this spring into the Order of the Golden Fleece, the University's oldest honorary society. Members are selected based upon service to Carolina, as reflected in scholarship, motivation, creativity, loyalty, and leadership in academic and extracurricular pursuits.
Falgowski, who is from Landenberg, Pa., is the third field hockey player to be inducted in the past five years, following Rachel Dawson in 2008 and Danielle Forword in 2010. Cindy Werley was inducted in 1998 after having been named National Player of the Year in back-to-back years. Coach Karen Shelton also is a member, having been inducted in 2002 for her achievements as the UNC coach.
"It's such a prestigious honor and it speaks to Katelyn Falgowski's impact on UNC," Shelton said. "It means that her peers recognize her brilliance, and the way she has represented this University. As a fellow Argonaut, I'm thrilled that she was selected for induction."
Founded in 1904 to unite student leaders at UNC, inductees are generally seniors but juniors, graduate students, faculty and alumni also eligible for membership.
The following citation was read as part of the announcement ceremony, which Falgowski was unable to attend due to her commitments to the U.S. National Team:
Katelyn Erin Falgowski - For her excellence in leadership and athletics. During her time as a member of the UNC Field Hockey team, Katelyn channeled her exceptional individual talent to have a dramatic impact on the program in the five years she was a member. By setting an example for her other teammates, Katelyn helped the Tar Heels to win two national championships as well as two runner-up finishes and was named National Player of the Year. Her list of personal accolades includes All-American, All-ACC, and All-ACC tournament honors. Serving as captain for both the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Katelyn learned how to balance the demands of playing for both the UNC team and representing the US National Team. In her participation in the Carolina Leadership Academy, Katelyn is a three time winner of the Leader of Distinction award, the highest honor presented to student athletes. She is acknowledged by both her coaches and fellow teammates as an exemplary student athlete earning Dean's List Honors. For these and other accomplishments, the Order of the Golden Fleece proudly taps Katelyn Falgowski.
