Former Tar Heels Join UNC Staff
August 24, 2012 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two Tar Heel alums have returned to the UNC field hockey program. Jackie Kintzer, who graduated in 2010 and now is a member of the U.S. National Team, will serve as the team's volunteer assistant coach. Teryn Brill, a 2011 graduate, will serve as the Director of Operations.
Kintzer, a goalkeeper from Robesonia, Pa., recently returned from London after serving as an alternate to the U.S. Olympic Team. At UNC, she earned first-team All-America honors in 2009 and 2010 and ranks fourth in school history with a career goals-against average of 0.95.
“Jackie's position is a very important one for our program and for our success this season, and I'm thrilled that she has accepted it,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “The fact that she's doing it in a volunteer's position is very selfless and she's giving back to the program in a very significant manner. Coming back straight from London to try to help us out is remarkable and we're very appreciative.”
Brill, a back from Oley, Pa., started every game for the Tar Heels in her in her junior and senior seasons.
“I'm delighted to have Teryn working with us as Director of Operations,” Shelton said. “She has a great strength in social media so she'll be doing a lot for the program in that realm and also will be involved in lots of other areas. It's nice to be able to turn over some of the day-to-day operations stuff so that the coaching staff can focus on coaching. “
Both Kintzer and Brill were members of the 2007 and 2009 NCAA Championship teams at UNC.
The Tar Heels open the 2012 season on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C., taking on Michigan in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Game time at Kentner Stadium is 11:30 a.m., with Wake Forest and Iowa meeting at 2 p.m. The opponents switch on Sunday, with Wake Forest and Michigan playing at 11:30 a.m. and UNC taking on Iowa at 2.
In the preseason national poll, released this week, UNC is No. 2, Michigan is No. 10, Iowa is No. 12 and Wake Forest is No. 13.
