Tar Heels Set Records In Nike Cup Day 2 Prelims
November 22, 2013 | Swimming & Diving
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Tar Heels look like they're going to do it again. Coming off a tremendous Day 1 at the 2013 Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup at the Koury Natatorium, the UNC Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Teams are pushing it to the limit and making it a Carolina blue show.
It was a record-setting day for Carolina, with two Tar Heels leaving their mark on the university and the event. Proving that success can come from both sides of Koury Natatorium, freshman diver Jack Nyquist made a lasting mark on the University of North Carolina, setting a school record in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 378.10.
In addition to Nyquist's diving success, the UNC's swimming also contributed to the excitement. Redshirt senior Carly Smith raised the bar she set back in 2010 in the women's 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at a Nike Cup record time of 53.65. The previous record she set back in 2010 was with a time of 53.76.
Throughout the morning and early afternoon, the UNC Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Teams shined with impressive showings in each event. In fact, each preliminary competition qualified at least two Tar Heels for the Day 2 Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup finals tonight at 6 p.m. The action continues this evening at Koury Natatorium as Carolina looks to retain its commanding lead, and every team has something to prove.
