Wold Gets Second Goal In U.S. Win
March 10, 2013 | Field Hockey
Tar Heel freshman Emily Wold scored her second goal in international competition as the U.S. Women's Field Hockey National Team beat Chile 2-1 at the IHF World League Round 2 Tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Wold is one of five current or former UNC players on the U.S. squad. Also competing in Brazil are Rachel Dawson, Katelyn Falgowski, Jackie Kintzer and Kelsey Kolojejchick.
With the temperature over 100 degrees, the game was scoreless through the first 35 minutes. Wold's goal came in the 38th minute of play, and Melissa Gonzalez added another in the 66th minute. Chile's goal came a minute later, with just three minutes remaining in the game.
The win puts Team USA in strong position to advance to World League Round 3. The top two teams from the six-team field will move on.
"We knew we needed to come out and get a result today," Falgowski said. "It wasn't always pretty but we executed our game plan and got the job done in tough conditions."
"I think today's performance was what it needed to be," said head coach Craig Parnham. "The conditions were difficult today, the hottest we have played in yet. We would have preferred to play better and there are things we need to work on but ultimately today was about getting a result."
The win puts the U.S. in the top two, dependent on the outcome of the Scotland-Uruguay match. The U.S. will face Trinidad and Tobago Sunday in the final match of the tournament.
