No. 1 UNC Uses Balanced Scoring To Beat Radford, 8-1
September 15, 2013 | Field Hockey
"It was a great team effort from everyone," said associate head coach Grant Fulton, speaking on behalf of head coach Karen Shelton, who departed for a trip shortly after the end of the game. "We subbed a lot, we created a lot of chances. It was nice to see six different scorers out of our eight goals.
"To Radford's credit they defended their circle really well. They were committed to the cause and made it very difficult for us to find openings. Their goalkeeper had an outstanding game."
Sophomores Nina Notman and Casey Di Nardo each scored twice for the Tar Heels, who continued to spread goals throughout the team. This fall, 14 different players have at least one goal and nine have two or more. Notman and Di Nardo are the scoring leaders with five each.
Against Radford, UNC's first goal came in the ninth minute of play, on the team's third penalty corner of the game. Junior Charlotte Craddock sent a hard shot past RU goalkeeper Sidney Encarnacion, assisted by freshman Julia Young on the stick stop and graduate student Janne Grove on the push-out.
The Tar Heels made it 2-0 in the 25th minute on Di Nardo's first goal, assisted by junior Loren Shealy, who sent a pass from the left side that the sophomore forward grabbed and shot in front of the goal.
In the 32nd minute, sophomore Emily Wold scored on a ball from Grove to make it 3-0 at halftime.
UNC's next goal came in the 40th minute, on the second penalty corner of the second half. Notman took a pass from senior Sinead Loughran and shot for her fourth goal of the season.
In the 46th minute, Di Nardo added her second goal of the game. On the break, Craddock carried the ball upfield and passed it to Shealy, who set up Di Nardo for the goal to make the score 5-0. The next came in the 52nd minute, when sophomore Emma Bozek took a shot and freshman Lauren Moyer deflected it in from the right side of the cage for her second goal of the season.
In the 60th minute, Notman scored again on a hard hit from the top of the circle.
Radford's goal came with 10:12 to play, just after the Highlanders took a timeout and both teams made goalie changes. UNC keeper Rosie Wood saved the first RU shot, but freshman Camaron Watkins gathered the rebound and shot again to put Radford on the board and make the score 7-1.
UNC's final goal came from freshman Kristy Bernatchez. In the 61st minute, she stole the ball and sent a shot just inside the left post.
"I thought our team was solid all around," Fulton said. "We've just got to be a little smarter in certain situations and a little sharper - our penalty corners need to be executed a little better as well."
Carolina finished with 45 shots and 18 penalty corners. The Highlanders had three shots, all in the second half.
Radford totaled 22 saves, 15 by starting keeper Encarnacion and seven by field players. Jordan Vrhovac, Jennifer Hedrick and Alayna Versage made two defensive saves each, and Amy Kinkler had one.
After two wins at home this weekend, the Tar Heels will hit the road again. They open Atlantic Coast Conference play Friday at Virginia, then travel to Richmond to take on VCU on Sunday. UNC's next home game is Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. against Duke.
