October 6, 2014 | Volleyball
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina senior opposite hitter Chaniel Nelson was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for her performances against Pittsburgh and Clemson.
This is the second time Nelson has earned ACC Player of the Week honors during her career after she was honored on Sept. 4, 2012. She is also the third UNC player to earn ACC weekly honors in 2014 after Lauren McAdoo and Ece Taner were recognized as Players of the Week in September.
The ACC also recognized Miami freshman setter Haley Templeton as the Freshman of the Week.
North Carolina's Nelson led the Tar Heels during the team's two victories over Pitt and Clemson this past weekend, knocking down 4.00 kills/set and tallying 1.50 blocks/set while setting a season-high for kills each match. During the Tar Heels thrilling comeback against Pitt, in which UNC was down 2-1 on the road, Nelson accounted for six kills, no errors and four blocks in the final two sets of action. On Sunday against Clemson, Nelson pounded 17 kills, only three away from her career-high, with three blocks and three digs.
Miami's Templeton distributed 44 assists and helped the Hurricanes hit .290 as a team in their four-set win over Clemson. The freshman also had one of three Miami aces against the Tigers and finished a single dig shy of a double-double. Two days later, Templeton shined before a standing room only crowd at the James L. Knight Sports Complex in Miami. Facing No. 5 Florida State, the Alpharetta, Georgia, native tied her career-high with 53 assists, added nine digs and had a career-best three block assists.
