U.S. Earns Spot In World Cup Semifinals

The U.S. Women's National Team, which includes five Tar Heels on its 18-player roster, finished pool play at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup undefeated (4-0-1) to earn a spot in the event's semifinals for the first time in 20 years.
Playing for the U.S. in Holland are former Carolina standouts Rachel Dawson, Katelyn Falgowski, Jackie Kintzer and Kelsey Kolojejchick as well as rising junior Emily Wold.
Team USA finished pool play on Tuesday with a 4-2 win over South Africa, which also has a Tar Heel on the roster in Illse Davids, who played at UNC 2006-09 and was a member of two NCAA title teams. Rachel Dawson, Davids' teammate on the 2007 championship team, scored the U.S.'s final goal in the game. Click here for photos from the match.
The U.S. opened World Cup play on June 1 with a 2-1 win over England then tied Argentina 2-2 on June 3 in a game played in a driving rainstorm with the UNC field hockey team in the stands. The Tar Heels also watched a 5-0 win over China on June 6. The U.S. beat Germany 4-1 on June 8 before wrapping up pool play with the South Africa game.
The U.S. will meet Australia in the semifinals on Thursday. The game is set for 10 a.m. EDT and will air live on ESPN3. Argentina and Holland meet in the other semifinals game. The title game is set for Saturday. Click here for the full schedule.
