CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Ashley Hoffman, a standout field hockey player from Mohnton, Pa., has signed an athletic aid offer to play for North Carolina, UNC coach Karen Shelton announced Thursday. Hoffman, currently a senior at Twin Valley High School, will graduate early and enroll at UNC in January of 2015.
With her parents, Scott and Brenda Hoffman, and coaches looking on, Hoffman signed the offer at a ceremony Sept. 2 at her high school.
"I'm thrilled and proud that Ashley Hoffman has chosen to attend University of North Carolina," Shelton said. "She's such a special player - outstanding skills but also a great work ethic and an obvious love for the game. She's very advanced for her age and she's ready to take her hockey to the next level. She's prepared academically, too, and is considering a path that will take her on to medical school after UNC."
In 2013, her junior year at Twin Valley, Hoffman served as team captain and was named first-team All-America. She is a three-time all-state and all-county honoree and was named the Berks County Player of the Year the past two seasons.
She is a member of the 2014-15 U.S. Under-21 National Team (along with four other Tar Heels) and also played for the U-17 and U-19 teams, representing the U.S. at the Junior Pan Am Games and in tours of Holland and Canada.
Hoffman's mother, Brenda, serves as her coach at Twin Valley and also has provided her with an outstanding field hockey background. Then Brenda Stauffer, she was the national player of the year at Penn State in 1982 and won a bronze medal for the U.S. at the 1984 Summer Olympics, where she was a teammate of Shelton's.
"I've known Ashley and the Hoffman family for years," Shelton said. "When we sign a player, we're bringing her family into the fold, too, and that's certainly the case here. We're excited to officially welcome the Hoffmans to the Carolina family and can't wait to have Ashley come to UNC in January."
