Annual Pink Match for Breast Cancer Set for Friday
October 6, 2015 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina volleyball team will host its annual Pink Match on Friday, Oct. 9, to help raise support and awareness for breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match to show their support to those who have been affected by breast cancer, and free pink water bottles will be distributed to the first 250 fans in attendance. Get REAL & HEEL will be selling pink t-shirts and other merchandise at the match, with all proceeds benefitting the Get REAL & HEEL Breast Cancer Program.
Get REAL & HEEL is a unique program designed to serve breast cancer patients in North Carolina. It integrates individualized prescriptive exercise with psychosocial therapies to provide a program that strengthens patients' bodies and minds. The program develops an individualized plan that helps patients to manage cancer treatment-related symptoms and helps increase their chances of survivorship while simultaneously improving quality of life. Fans who purchase pink merchandise or give donations at Friday's match will help provide this incredible program to patients in need free of charge.
In addition to the Pink promotion, the Virginia match will also play host to the “Save the Fox” initiative. In honor of UNC alum Superior Court Judge Carl Fox, who was diagnosed with myelodyspastic syndrome, Carolina Athletics has teamed up to help expand the bone marrow donor registry with deletebloodcancer.org. A registry table will be set up in the concourse of Carmichael Arena for fans who are willing to take a brief moment for a cheek swab to be added to the database of potential bone marrow donors.
UNC Athletics will also be partnering with the "Save the Fox" initiative and deletebloodcancer.org when the Tar Heels host Syracuse in men's soccer at Fetzer Field on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. and when football takes on Wake Forest at Kenan Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.
The annual volleyball Pink Match will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, when the Tar Heels host the University of Virginia at Carmichael Arena. Doors open at 5 p.m.
