Walker Shines In Victory Over Iona

North Carolina (3-2) led throughout, but it was Walker that made sure to keep the visiting Gaels winless on the season at 0-4. The freshman guard from Orlando, Fla., shot a brilliant 10-of-13 from the field in leading her team in scoring for the second time this season.
Senior N'Dea Bryant reached double figures for the second-straight outing with 10 points.
Stephanie Watts (11 points) came out with a purpose to begin Carolina's second game in as many days. She drove the lane twice, and later knocked down a three-pointer for an early 10-2 lead over the Gaels. Walker joined in the shooting festivities with a triple of her own that helped UNC take a 19-10 lead after one quarter.
Walker continued her strong play in the second stanza by scoring nine of her 14 first-half points. Carolina led by as many as 14 points, before settling for a 32-21 advantage at the half.
Iona (0-4) hung around for most of the second half, but Walker made a pair of clutch three-pointers in the fourth quarter that gave the Tar Heels a little breathing room down the stretch.
Marina Lizarazu led the Gaels with 22 points.
The third and final day of the Naismith Memorial Basketball event takes place Sunday. Iona and Fairleigh Dickinson start at 1 p.m., followed 30 minutes after by North Carolina and Yale at approximately 3 p.m.
