Nyquist & Dawson Earn NCAA Championships Invitations

ATHENS, GA. – The University of North Carolina diving contingent had a stellar day on the boards Monday at the 2015 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships at the University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium.
Sophomore Jack Nyquist placed fourth in men's one-meter diving and earned an invitation to the 2015 NCAA Championships slated for March 26-28 at Iowa City, Iowa. On the women's three-meter diving board, freshman Elissa Dawson took a sixth-place finish and thus earned an invite to the Women's NCAA Championships, which will be held March 19-21 in Greensboro, N.C.
Tar Heel performers were consistent on both boards today with three Tar Heel men finishing in the Top 15 of men's one-meter diving and three UNC women in the Top 11 of the women's three-meter event. The top nine men on the one-meter board and the top seven women on the three-meter board earned invitations on Monday.
Nyquist led the Tar Heel men's standings with his fourth place finish with 747.50 points. Freshman Sean Burston was 13th with 618.10 points and junior Ozzie Moyer was 15th with 580.60 points. Points were combined between prelims and finals to determine ultimate placings. Nyquist entered the championship final in fourth coming off prelims and Burston and Moyer both moved up one spot in the final from their preliminary placings.
On the women's side, Dawson had a truly consistent day in placing sixth overall and earning her spot in the NCAA field. The Durham, N.C., freshman was sixth after the preliminaries and took sixth overall with her score of 630.05, locking down a spot in the field by a margin of close to 12 points.
UNC junior Michole Timm was the last diver to earn a spot in the final as she was 18th in the preliminaries with a score of 275.25. Timm dive lights out in the final session, notching over 310 points, and finishing with a score of 587.75 overall points for 10th place. Senior Kelly Corish was consistent in both sessions and she finished with an overall score of 574.35 points for 11th place in the field (she had also been 11th after prelims with 289.65 points).
The NCAA Zone B Diving Championships will continue on Tuesday at the University of Georgia with the women's one-meter diving competition in the morning session and the men's three-meter diving competition in the afternoon session.
