Four UNC Players Taken Friday In NWSL Draft

CHICAGO, ILL. - The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) completed the 2016 NWSL College Draft on Friday afternoon with 40 players being selected over four rounds from the NSCAA Convention in Baltimore.
Four University of North Carolina women's soccer players were taken in the first three rounds of the draft.
Senior midfielder/defender Katie Bowen was taken with the sixth pick of the second round by defending NWSL champion FC Kansas City. The same team drafted Tar Heel senior forward Alexa Newfield with the eighth pick of the third round.
Two other Tar Heels went to Seattle Reign FC which has won the regular season NWSL championship in both 2014 & 2015. Defender Paige Nielsen was taken with the fifth pick of the third round while forward Summer Green was chosen with the 10th pick of the third round. Green was the youngest player of the 40 draftees at age 20.
