Taylor Leath Earns AVCA Second-Team All-America

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Carolina sophomore outside hitter Taylor Leath was named to the All-America Second Team on Wednesday, as selected by a committee of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The ACC Player of the Year is the fourth All-America selection in UNC history and the second ever to earn Second Team honors, while this is the third consecutive year that a Tar Heel has earned All-America status. Additionally, East Coast Region Freshman of the Year Julia Scoles was named All-America Honorable Mention.

Leath was the sole ACC member selected as an All-American this season, while eight ACC student-athletes (including Scoles) earned All-America Honorable Mentions. First-Team selections Lauren Carlini (Wisconsin) and Kadie Rolfzen (Nebraska) became just the 27th and 28th student-athletes ever to earn four consecutive All-America awards. In addition to All-America honors, the AVCA committee presents two individual awards. Stanford outside hitter Kathryn Plummer, a First-Team selection, was named the 2016 AVCA Division I Freshman of the Year. The AVCA will announce the 2016 Player of the Year on Dec. 16 in Columbus, Ohio, at the AVCA All-America banquet, held in conjuntion with the 2016 AVCA Convention.

The first Tar Heel to earn full All-America honors prior to her senior year

Ranked in the top five all time among UNC freshmen in kills, kills per set, attempts, hitting percentage and aces per set, while finished seventh in digs and digs per set and 10th in total aces
Recorded double-digit kills in 18 matches, double-digit digs 12 times, and 10 double-doubles
Registered the first kills-digs 20-20 in five years at Notre Dame, tallying 23 kills and 21 digs in the five-set victory
Won ACC Freshman of the Week and Penn State Classic MVP after her first collegiate weekend of play
A six-rotation outside hitter, she recorded the highest reception percentage of all primary passers on the team
The second Tar Heel ever to win back-to-back ACC Player of the Week honors
The third Tar Heel freshman to garner All-America Honorable Mention
