March 10, 2016 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina field hockey team will open spring competition Friday when it faces the U.S. Under-21 National Team at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The match is set for 7 p.m.
The teams were slated to meet in mid-February, when the U21 held its first training camp in Chapel Hill, but the game was cancelled due to winter weather. The U.S. team is again training here, in preparation for the 2016 Junior Pan Am Games March 29-April 10 in Trinidad & Tobago.
The U21 roster includes several Tar Heels, all of whom will play in red, white and blue on Friday. Ashley Hoffman, Gab Major, Lauren Moyer and Julia Young will represent the U.S., playing against their Carolina teammates.
In addition to Friday's scrimmage, the Tar Heels will play intercollegiate matchups on three dates this spring. On April 2, they'll host a play day that also includes Duke, James Madison and Wake Forest, beginning at 9 a.m. at Henry Stadium. On April 9, Duke will play host, with Old Dominion, Davidson, Duke and UNC competing in Durham beginning at 9 a.m.
On April 15, UNC will again travel to Durham for a 6 p.m. matchup with Duke. The following day, the Tar Heels will host their annual alumni game at Henry Stadium.
UNC finished the 2015 season with a record of 21-3, winning the Atlantic Coast Conference crown and reaching the NCAA Championship game.
