U.S. Team, With Four Tar Heels, Undefeated In Pool Play

The USA Field Hockey Under-21 team, which includes four North Carolina players, completed pool play Sunday at the Junior Women's Pan American Championships with a 3-0 record. The team beat host Trinidad & Tobago 10-0 in the opener on March 31, Canada 5-1 on April 2 and Mexico 9-0 on April 3.
Representing the U.S. in Tacarigua, Trinidad, are juniors Lauren Moyer and Julia Young, sophomore Gab Major and freshman Ashley Hoffman.
The U.S. squad begins crossover play on Tuesday with a game against Barbados, which was winless in Pool A. Games continue on Thursday with the championship on Saturday. The top two teams will earn berths in the Junior Women's World Cup, set for Nov. 23-Dec. 4 in Chile.
Major is the team's leading scorer with seven goals in the three games. In the matchup with Mexico, Major scored twice and Hoffman once. Against Canada, Major again had two goals and Hoffman had one. In the opener against Trinidad & Tobago, Major had a hat trick, while Hoffman and Moyer added one each.
