UNC Will Meet Saint Joseph's In NCAA First Round
November 5, 2017 | Field Hockey
The Tar Heels are the No. 4 seed in the field
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina will open NCAA Field Hockey Tournament play Saturday with a first-round matchup against Saint Joseph's, the winner of the Atlantic 10 title. The two will meet in Charlottesville, Va., where the host Cavaliers will play Princeton in the other first-round matchup. The winners meet Sunday for a spot in the NCAA semifinals.
"We're thrilled to be playing in the tournament and we look forward to meeting Saint Joseph's on Saturday," said UNC coach Karen Shelton. "All season we work toward the tournament – it's an exciting time of year. We'll get back to Chapel Hill, get a little bit of rest and start getting ready to play Saint Joseph's."
The Tar Heels (16-4) found out their NCAA Tournament draw while still on the bus returning from Louisville, Ky., where they won the ACC Championship earlier on Sunday. The title gave UNC the league's automatic bid to the NCAA field.
The Tar Heels are making their 15th NCAA appearance in a row, the 34th in program history. UNC has made more NCAA appearances than any other school
The Hawks (18-3) are making their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance after winning their first A-10 title in 22 years.
UNC is the No. 4 seed in the field, a spot that would generally host games. (The top four seeds in the bracket host.) However, the Tar Heels are without a home stadium this season while a new facility is under construction, so hosting duties fall to Virginia.
The North Carolina-Saint Joseph's game is set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, and the Virginia-Princeton game will follow at 2 p.m.
