CHARLOTTE, N.C. – North Carolina star recruit Janelle Bailey was again the center of attention on Wednesday at her McDonald's All American jersey ceremony. Bailey was honored as part of the McDonald's All American Games Hometown Heroes presented by American Family Insurance.
“Coming from Providence Day, I'm only the second McDonald's All American along with Jatarie White,” said Bailey. “So it means a lot to my school, it means a lot to my family, and being one of the 24 girls selected shows how hard I have worked and how it has finally paid off.”
For 40 years, the McDonald's All American Games have celebrated the nation's top high school talent.
Bailey is a 6'4” center who has helped lead the Chargers to three NCISAA state championships and their current 22-4 record. She is a three time All-Conference and All-State center who is currently averaging 24.4 points per game as well as 12.6 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2 blocked shots. She recently surpassed 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. This past summer she led the USA U17 basketball team to a bronze medal in the FIBA World Championships in Spain. She played all seven games and averaged 9.3 points and 9.1 rebounds.
She will join the Tar Heels later this year for her freshman campaign in Chapel Hill.
“I look forward to meeting the team and my coaches, and expanding my game and getting better,” Bailey said. “I've already set my goal as being Freshman of the Year in the ACC. Coach (Sylvia) Hatchell and I have already talked about it as something I can accomplish. It's about independence all-around: Growing into my own person, but basketball-wise getting better, even with things that are not on the court.”
