Bozek Named ACC Scholar-Athlete For Field Hockey
February 8, 2017 | Field Hockey, Academics
UNC graduate Emma Bozek, who excelled academically and athletically for the Tar Heels, has been honored as the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She joins four other Tar Heels – Malin Evert, Ashley Hoffman, Sam Night and Julia Young – on the All-ACC Field Hockey Team, announced Wednesday by the ACC Commissioner John Swofford.
Bozek completed her UNC degree in December following a stellar senior season that earned her second-team All-America honors and a spot on the All-ACC team. But just being back on the field was a major accomplishment, after she was forced to sit out the 2015 season as she worked her way back to health following lung surgery that summer. As a senior, she started all 26 games and served as one of the team's vice captains, helping to lead the Tar Heels to a runner-up finish in the NCAA Championship and the ACC Championship. The All-ACC Academic honor is the fourth of her career and she also earned ACC Academic Honor Roll and Dean's List honors. She graduated with distinction, an honor bestowed on those with a GPA of 3.5 or better.
“Emma has always done well academically, and in the last two years she showed how tough she is, and how brave,” UNC coach Karen Shelton said. “She overcame a lot of adversity to be a leader on our team. I'm so proud of her and thrilled that she has earned this honor.”
She is the third Tar Heel to earn the ACC Scholar-Athlete honor, following Rachel Dawson in 2007 and Loren Shealy in 2013.
Evert, Night and Young all were named to the All-ACC Academic team for the second time and Hoffman was honored for the first time.
Evert is a sophomore from Bad Schwartau, Germany, and is majoring in sociology.
Night, from Houston, Texas, graduated in December with a degree in public policy.
Young is a senior from Yorktown, Va., and is will graduate in May with a degree in exercise and sport science.
All seven ACC schools that compete in field hockey are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team. Ten players on the All-ACC Academic Team were named All-Americans following the 2016 season, while 14 were voted All-ACC.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
