Five Tar Heels To Attend U.S. National Team Tryout

Colorado Springs, Colo. – Five members of the North Carolina volleyball team will participate in the U.S. Women's National Team Tryout to be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, March 3-5. Taylor Borup, Holly Carlton, Taylor Fricano, Madison Laufenberg and Julia Scoles will all represent the Tar Heels as they vie for spots on the U.S. Women's National Team, the U.S. Collegiate National Teams program and, for those born in 1998 or 1999, the U.S. Junior National Team.
Laufenberg and Scoles have previous experience with the U.S. National Team program, while Borup, Carlton and Fricano will seek to make a team for the first time. Laufenberg was a member of the 2014 USA Women's Volleyball Junior A1 National Training Team that won gold at the 2014 High Performances Championships, while Scoles made the A1 Training Team the following summer in 2015.
U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly will direct the entire tryout process, which will feature 243 athletes from 84 colleges and 10 high schools across the country. The tryout will involve four sessions with three waves per session. Friday's session goes from 4-10 p.m. ET, while Saturday's sessions are at 10 a.m. ET (serve/receive, individual work) and 4 p.m. ET (middle-centered, out-of-system focus). The final session on Sunday begins at 9:30 a.m. ET with tournament-style play along with 16-18 athletes selected by the National Team staff to participate in a “USA” training session. The final session will conclude at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Selected athletes for the U.S. Women's National Team may begin their training in Anaheim, California, as early as the spring of 2017. The U.S. Collegiate National Team program has three competition options: Tour of Thailand (12 athletes, May 19-30), Tour of Europe (12 athletes, July 5-16), USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championships (est. 36 athletes, June 22-July 1, Minneapolis). Selections will be made by the end of March.
