Hendrick's Three Goals Lead UNC Past Hokies, 14-6

BLACKSBURG, VA. – The second-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team got three goals from Molly Hendrick and picked up a road Atlantic Coast Conference win at No 12 Virginia Tech, 14-6, on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Carolina won its 16th consecutive game against an ACC opponent and improved to 10-1 this season, 3-0 in ACC action. The Hokies fell to 11-3, 2-1. The Tar Heels have won 27 of their last 28 games.
UNC improved to 24-0 all-time against Virginia Tech, including 10-0 in Blacksburg and 19-0 in regular season games.
On Tuesday, the Tar Heels boasted a balanced offensive attack with with eight different scorers, including Hendrick scoring three times and Ela Hazar adding two goals and an assist. Marie McCool, Carly Reed and Kara Klages each scored twice. Sydney Holman had a goal and an assist while Maggie Bill and Sammy Jo Tracy each scored once. Charlotte Sofield added an assist.
"We are excited about the win today," head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "Coming in, we had specific team goals and I really liked how the team tackled each challenge element. It was a team effort in all ways, we put a lot of pressure on a good Virginia Tech team.
"As usual, we had many different contributors on the offensive end. But the highlight was our defense, which posted our best performance of the season, holding Virginia Tech to three goals for 51 minutes of play. We are in the middle of our ACC regular season and every game is an opportunity to continue to improve and get better."
As a team, Carolina won 17 of 22 draw controls in the game, led by Sammy Jo Tracy's 12. The Tar Heels also out-shot the Hokies, 44-17.
The Tar Heels jumped out early, leading 5-1 after 20 minutes and 9-2 at halftime, and didn't look back in the second half until they allowed three consecutive Hokie goals to end the contest. The UNC defense held Virginia Tech to just three goals through the first 53 minutes of the game.
Senior All-America Caylee Waters started in goal for Carolina and picked up the victory, improving to 10-1 this season while recording five saves, allowing three goals and gathering two ground balls.
Carolina will return to action on Sunday April 2 at noon at Notre Dame.
