All three Tar Heel goals came in the first half.
DURHAM, N.C. – The UNC field hockey team earned its second win of the weekend Sunday afternoon, blanking 13th-ranked James Madison 3-0 at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. The 10th-ranked Tar Heels got goals from three different players, two of whom came off the bench, and improved to 6-2 overall with their third shutout of the fall.
Sunday's game was the second of a three-game homestand for UNC, which beat No. 10 Boston College in overtime on Saturday. The Tar Heels, who are playing their home games at Duke this season while a new on-campus stadium is under construction, host Davidson in Durham on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
"I'm pleased with a 3-0 victory today over a tough and scrappy JMU team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It was nice to see our team play fatigued, back-to-back against two ranked teams, and come away with two wins. I thought we were particularly sharp in the first half – we put pressure on them from the opening whistle and were able to score some goals."
All three Tar Heel goals came in the first half. In the third minute of play, sophomore Feline Guenther sent the ball from the top left of the arc to Gab Major near the cage on the baseline. The senior sent it back out to junior Eva van't Hoog, who was positioned in front of the cage and shot behind the goalkeeper to score and put UNC up 1-0.
Five minutes later, the Tar Heels made it 2-0. Sophomore Catherine Hayden sent a cross from the right side of the cage and sophomore Megan DuVernois tipped it past JMU goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler.
In the 32nd minute, van't Hoog shot the ball from the left side of the circle and Hayden deflected it in from the front of the cage to make the score 3-0.
"I like this team a lot," Shelton said. "They're hard working, they're unselfish and they're trying to do the right things. We have a long way to go and lot more tough competition, but I just hope the kids maintain their positive attitudes and work ethic, and good things hopefully will continue to happen. "
For the game, UNC had 22 shots (11 in each half) to nine by JMU. The Tar Heels drew 8 penalty corners and the Dukes had five.
Redshirt freshman Amanda Hendry started in goal for UNC. Sophomore Alex Halpin played the final 17:25 of the game.
