CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina is the top seed in the 2018 NCAA Field Hockey Championship field, announced Sunday night, and will host first and second-round games at Karen Shelton Stadium this weekend. The Tar Heels earned an automatic berth by winning the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Sunday afternoon.
The Tar Heels open play Friday, facing the winner of a Wednesday play-in game between William & Mary and Monmouth. Michigan and Saint Joseph's will meet in the other Chapel Hill first-round game Friday. The winners play Sunday in the second round for a spot in the NCAA semifinals.
"We're thrilled to play at least one more home game this season and to welcome Michigan, Saint Joseph's, and either Monmouth or William & Mary to Chapel Hill," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Our team has been extremely focused all season and we're excited to look ahead toward our next goal.
"We're coming off a great weekend at home and hope we can keep the momentum going. it was amazing to win the ACC Championship in front of a packed house and we hope our fans will come out again this weekend and give us a full house and a home advantage."
The Tar Heels are making their 16th NCAA appearance in a row, the 35th in program history. UNC has made more NCAA appearances than any other school.
