Goetz Honored As Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete
March 3, 2018 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Winners of this year's Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete awards, which recognize a top academic performer on each Tar Heel team, were honored Tuesday night at the Dean E. Smith Center. The student-athletes took the court at halftime of the UNC men's basketball game, where fans had the opportunity to cheer their academic accomplishments in a venue usually focused on athletics.
Morgan Goetz, a junior from Cary, N.C., was the field hockey team's honoree.
The recipients are all juniors and seniors who have excelled academically. Joining them on the Smith Center court were Chancellor Carol Folt, Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham, Faculty Athletics Representative Lissa Broome and Director of the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes Michelle Brown.
"Being able to recognize these juniors and seniors who have done such a great job of balancing their many responsibilities and excelling academically is an honor," Cunningham said. "Usually when they're being applauded by a crowd it's for something they've done athletically, so to have our fans be able to cheer them for their academic successes is really special."
