Tar Heels Will Meet Stanford In NCAA First Round Game
November 13, 2019 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two days away from beginning NCAA Tournament play, the North Carolina field hockey team now knows who its first-round opponent will be. The top-ranked Tar Heels will face No. 15 Stanford on Friday at noon at Karen Shelton Stadium. Host Stanford (16-6) beat Miami (Ohio) 3-1 Wednesday in a play-in game.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors. UNC students get in free. Advance tickets are available here.
"We're excited to play Stanford," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They've had a great year. They've worked hard all season and had some really good wins. They pose some awesome challenges for us with [Kelsey] Bing in goal and [Corinne] Zanolli up front. We're excited and happy to be in the tournament and to have the chance to play on Friday."
Zanolli, a junior, scored all three goals in the win over Miami and now has 33 goals on the season. She and Tar Heels sophomore Erin Matson lead the nation in points per game. Bing, like Matson, was part of the U.S. National Team that competed in India earlier this month.
In fact, all three of the collegiate players on that U.S. team – Bing, Matson and Duke senior Margaux Paolino – will be at Shelton Stadium on Friday as Duke takes on Iowa at 2:30 p.m. in the second of the first-round games to be hosted by the Tar Heels. The winners meet Sunday at 1 p.m. for a final four spot.
UNC leads the series with the Cardinal 10-1. Four of those meetings have come in NCAA Tournament play, most recently in 2016, when Carolina won 3-0 in a first-round game in College Park, Md. The teams last met in Chapel Hill in 2012, when UNC won 4-1 in an NCAA first-round game. The Tar Heels also hosted the Cardinal in the regular season that year, winning 6-2 in a homefield game on Sept. 23, 2012.
