Sagula Announces Addition of Phegley to 2020 Squad

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina volleyball is pleased to announce the addition of middle/rightside hitter Amanda Phegley to the 2020 team. Transferring from Penn State, Phegley will enroll at UNC in January with two years of eligibility remaining.

"What we like about Amanda is that she's versatile," head coach Joe Sagulasaid. "She can play multiple positions with middle and rightside being her strengths. She has size, athleticism, a heavy arm and comes from a culture that knows how to be successful. She's coming from a program that knows how to win and has a great work ethic. She has a high volleyball IQ and has the qualities we want in our program. She'll be an offensive weapon for us and an impactful player. She's a great student as well. She'll bring not only her physical talents, but also her mental and emotional skills to be a leader and upperclassman in our program. She's a mature player and experienced player. She's highly thought of by her teammates and coaches. This was the right opportunity for her to contribute more on the court in 2020."
A sophomore from Tampa, Florida, Phegley has played the past two seasons with the Nittany Lions who advanced to the NCAA Regional Final in 2018 and 2019. Throughout her time at Penn State, Phegley has played in 15 matches, totaling 16 kills and seven blocks. She had a single-match best of six kills and two blocks at Purdue in 2018. Phegley was ranked No. 56 as a PrepVolleyball.com Senior Ace coming out of high school and a named a second-team 2017 Under Armor All-American. She averaged 3.3 kills per set on a .474 hitting percentage in her senior season, adding 1.2 blocks per set. Phegley totaled 457 kills on a .456 hitting percentage, adding 183 total blocks, with a 50-10 record, and the 2017 Florida 5A State Title in her two seasons at Berkeley Prep. She attended P.K. Yonge Development Research School for her freshman and sophomore years . Phegley went 60-3 in her two years, winning the 3A Florida State Championship in 2014, and the 4A title in 2015.
