Tar Heels Set For Battle With Seahawks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The UNC women's basketball team plays its 10th game of the season on Friday evening, taking on UNCW at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center as part of the Carolinas Classic. For the first time this year, the Tar Heels are in bounce-back mode: after opening the season with eight wins in a row, they lost in their most-recent outing, 83-77 at Alabama on Sunday.
"It will be good to see how we respond after our first loss of the season," UNC coach Courtney Banghart said. "We need to do a better job guarding the ball and being disciplined on defense so we stay out of foul trouble."
Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. and there's no video coverage, but fans can listen here, watch live stats here or follow on Twitter @UNCWBB.
The Tar Heels (8-1) are playing in Myrtle Beach for the 26th year in a row and are 30-7 over that span. Last year UNC went 1-1 here, beating Rice and falling to Auburn in overtime. Carolina plays just one game in the event this year, taking on the Seahawks, who are 3-6 going into their matchup with Catawba on Thursday evening.
It's the fourth time overall the UNC-system rivals have met, and the third year in a row. Carolina leads the series 3-0.
With fall semester classes behind them, the Tar Heels practiced in Chapel Hill all week before busing to the beach on Thursday afternoon. After playing on Friday night, they'll scatter for a holiday break before reuniting after Christmas to prepare to host Yale on Dec. 28.
"With the break ahead of us, it's important that we send ourselves out in a good fashion," Banghart said.
The Yale game, set for 1 p.m. at Carmichael Arena, is Dollar Day, with all tickets $1. The first 200 hotdogs and small sodas are $1 each.
