Tar Heels Wrap Up Regular Season at Virginia and Florida
April 25, 2019 | Track & Field
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. / GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The North Carolina track and field teams head back to the University of Virginia and the University of Florida for the second time this season. The Virginia Grand Prix and the Tom Jones Memorial meet from April 26-27 will be the Tar Heels' final stops of the regular season.
"It's the last weekend of the regular season so it's going to be a great opportunity for some of the student-athletes to improve upon their ACC standings," head coach Harlis Meaders. "Good opportunity for us to run some of the relays down in Florida with some excellent competition. I think our kids are primed and ready to improve upon their performances. We're looking forward to great competition at both venues."
At the Virginia Grand Prix, Tar Tar Heel distance will take to the track while a few more field performers look to improve their season-best performances. Competition is slated for a 4 p.m. start on Friday with a majority of the events on Saturday, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
In Gainesville, the Tom Jones Memorial meet kicks off competition with the women's discus at 3 p.m. on Friday and resumes at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the men's discus. Carolina will primarily compete in sprints, hurdles and relay events at Florida with appearances in throws and horizontal jumps.

LAST TIME OUT
North Carolina track and field faced a challenging weekend at the Duke Invitational and the Virginia Challenge as adverse weather threatened to halt the two-day competitions. Despite the rainy and windy conditions, the Tar Heels managed to still set five season bests and four personal records between Durham and Charlottesville.
The Tar Heels four personal records all came in distance events while two Carolina field competitors barely missed their personal-best marks.
Drew Pedersen, a senior from Apex, N.C., cleared a collegiate-best height of 16-4 3/4 (5.00 meters) for fifth place in the men's pole vault at the Duke Invitational. Pedersen's performance was just one quarter inch off his lifetime best and ranked third in the ACC.
Daniel McArthur, a junior from Mooresville, N.C., threw 62-8 (19.10 meters) for a season-best shot put and fifth place at the Virginia Challenge. McArthur's performance missed his outdoor personal record by just one centimeter and improved his ACC No. 2 mark.
Madeline Kraft, a sophomore from Winston-Salem, N.C., opened her season with a lifetime-best performance to win the women's 800 in Virginia. Her time of 2:09.85 bested her previous career record by over two seconds.
In the Virginia Challenge's 1,500-meter races, Ashley Smith, Emmeline Fisher and Mitch Resor each clocked a personal-best time. Fisher, a sophomore transfer from Morehead City, N.C., ran 4:35.85 and Smith, a redshirt sophomore from Clemmons, N.C., finished in 4:41.54. Resor, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., placed second in the men's 1,500-meter competition with a lifetime-best 3:57.38.
IN THE RANKINGS
North Carolina holds 10 top-five times/marks in the ACC, seven top-20 times/marks in the NCAA East Region and nine top-50 times/marks in NCAA Division I outdoor competition.
